Update on Coastal Life

Well life has been going well out here on the cost. The bookstore is starting to see black ink, and the family is starting to get settled.

I have been writing articles for a local newspaper and they want for me to do a book review every month. I am excited about that. It is very interesting seeing my name in print and have people reading what I wrote.

It is November now so I am starting my yearly quest to do novel. Here goes. Hopefully this year I make it. I seem to have more energy than I have for a decade so I am feeling good about my chances.

Time Warp

Do you know those days when time seems to speed up. You look at the clock one minute and then you look again and four hours have passed and you didn't even notice. Today was just such a day. It really blows my mind how fast time can fly when you are having fun.

I am totally enjoying this book-selling business. Meeting and chatting with people all day and cleaning up and arranging books. I have especially been enjoying the children. They come in and are so excited to see the books and the fish and the wooden blocks. They really brighten the day.

Life is good.

Boy have things changed

I haven't posted on here for three years and looking at my last post it becomes obvious how things have changed in my life.

Purchasing property in Nova Scotia was a Huge mistake. That capital letter on the word 'Huge' is on purpose because it was a monumental error. I learned first hand how easy it is to be ripped off repeatedly when you are thousands of kilometres from your properties. The good property manager we had only lasted three months before a personal crisis made her resign. After that initial good start it was all bad news, and I lost my shirt in the process.

It wasn't all bad though. My wife and children got to spend a summer in Nova Scotia, and my youngest in particular had a wonderful time there. She still talks about it. In addition I learned a lot, and they say that education is expensive so I guess I am OK with that.

After some introspection we decided that life was too short to put off our dreams, and so we made a big move this spring in relocating from Edmonton to Vancouver Island in order to open a bookstore and try living more simply. We are currently living on an acreage in Duncan and have been enjoying a fine summer here. The bookstore is doing well so far and I have high hopes that it will one day (soon) put food on our table.

We shall see...

I'm back

hello everyone. after a long hiatus I am getting back into the virtual world. I haven't been on the internet much lately so I have only been catching up to things.

We purchased some housing out in Nova Scotia this summer. Hopefully it pays for itself. They say the only thing they are not making more of is land so I believe it a good investment. I have a property manager out there and my hope is to improve the places that I own and make happy tenants... I will keep you posted on how this all works out.

keeping it interesting

I had a coffee with a really good friend of mine recently, and she has told me to keep it interesting on my blog, so I thought I had better put on a new message at least once every month to keep her interest up. I mean... my blog isn't exactly grand central station here on the web. I had better keep what interest I may have.

So let's talk about friends.

It's always a little daunting when you are meeting a friend you haven't seen in a number of years. Not sure about you, but I wonder if the connection is still there after all this time. Will you meet for coffee and discuss drab details of your life like you do around the water cooler at work... or will it be an engaging re-acquaintance with a person you once shared a lot of time with.

It's a real treat when you can meet up with someone and pick up commonalities and in depth conversation as though you haven't missed a beat. Friends like that are very hard to find. It's good when you can connect like that, and feel like no matter how long that you chat it won't be long enough to say all you want to say.

Then there is the friends who feel you owe them time... that's it's an obligation. They phone you and berate you for not phoning them. I have managed to weed those friends out of my life. With kids and a job who needs any more pressure. The only people who have a right to make demands on my time are my children and my wife... everything else is extra.

The best friends are ones who phone you when they want to... and don't hold and false pretenses... they just like spending time with you. No obligation... They don't want to talk to you if you don't feel like it and they don't get offended. They are secure that you like them and in turn you feel secure that they like you. An open honest and free friendship... those are so rare.

Nanowrimo

Hi all,
I have been part of an international effort called Nanowrimo. For those of you uninitiated into the world of Nanowrimo please let me explain. Nanowrimo is National Novemember writing month. Check it out at nanowrimo.org. The whole thing is based upon writing a 50,000 word novel in a month. If you do, then you win! Win what, you ask. Why you win the recognition of having "done it" on the Nanowrimo website... nothing more than that. Sound ludicrous? It is. But it has been a godsend for me. Let me tell you why.

It is November 29, and I have 48,000 words of a Novel down in virtual paper. That never would have happened without a deadline. I was the guy in University who pulled all nighters and procrastinated to beat all. I usually got the job done, but I needed a deadline. Now I have noe. An artificial ridiculous one, but a deadline just the same, and now I have something to work with. It may never be a publishable work, but it is a darn site better than anythnig else I have ever done, and it proves to me that YES, I could write a novel. That was worth every hour spent typing after my kids went to bed... every lunch hour at work that I spent, and every weekend afternoon that was devoted to theis crazy project. To know that I CAN is very important.

Maybe someday someone will even want to read it, but that is secondary at this point.

NANOWRIMO

Heh Heh... I discovered this neat thing called National November writing month. It's just bunch of people creating a deadline so that you actually write some prose before you edit to death. Al l you do is sign up, and the way to win is to do a Novle of 50,000 words or more by the end of the month. I discovered it late, but I am 10% of the way there and 50% through the month... it's time to step on the gas and kick some ass.

My internet connection is super slow, yet I pay for hgih speed... what's the deal... what a rip...

OK - go oilers go...

and
Bye
